About RWS Photography | Fun children's portraits

You've made it to the place where children's photography is fun and relaxed. No stiff poses or fakey smiles allowed! Show off your favorite toys, make silly faces and roll around in the leaves. What do you get? A photo that really captures a piece of your child's personality. It's those little details you will remember about them...their cowlicks and freckles, their tiny fingers and missing front teeth.

And since you made it here (woohoo!), take some time to check out the links at the very bottom of this page for all things cool, and the links across the top of the page for answers to all of your questions. Enjoy!

Things I learned at the fair

10 things I learned at the Butler County Fair
1. Calves are bad. Very bad. It’s not their idea of fun to be walked around in a circle by a poor 4-H child.
2. Steers are HUGE. And when they misbehave while being held by a tiny 100 pound teenager, the situation feels a little out of control.
3. Fairs still have freaky sideshow attractions. How did I not know this?
4. Not every dog is meant to be a Dock Dog. One hint might be if your dog doesn’t want to jump off the dock.
5. The midway workers yell at you to try to get you to play their games.
6. I still don’t like ferris wheels. They are freaky.
7. I must be a city girl because I have never seen sheep covered head to toe with shiny leotard material.
8. We walked by a calf being born. I looked around…did no one care? I was a little disturbed that the birth wasn’t being monitored. This is all news to me.
9. I didn’t have anyone to explain to me what the purpose of the little scratcher thing was during the 4-H showing of cattle.
10. I want to go to a large state fair now. This whole thing was fun!

Not quite digital

I posted last week about my little film experiment. This week I’ll tell you all about my Polaroid binge.

My sister is mainly my inspiration for getting into Polaroid shooting. She has been completely into Polaroids for about the last eight years. She got an i-Zone when she was younger and hasn’t stopped shooting with instant film since. She dragged her massive Polaroid One Step everywhere with her over the years, enduring people’s weird looks and jokes. That is, until they saw the photo develop and then resorted to begging her to give them the photo. No giveaways to people to make jokes!

Since then she has added a few more Polaroid cameras to her collection and turned out some pretty awesome photos. We were both pretty into the Fuji Instax Mini 7S this past Christmas. This post is getting wordy, so I will wrap it up. One thing led to another and I turned to thrift store scavenging for cameras. The stars must have been aligned because I found a working Polaroid OneStep Closeup camera. It even had the flash override feature. Yay! It takes 600 film which I am lucky enough to be able to get from the Impossible Project. What follows is the end result of a two-day photo-taking binge I went on, exploring the camera and the film. The last photo is the sister/source of instant film inspiration!

You can check out the entirety of my Polaroid bingeing here.
