What’s out is in again

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Like many fads from years ago, what was once in style usually makes its way back again. Film is no exception. There seems to be some sort of film resurgence going on in the photography world thanks to the amazing film shooters like Jonathan Canlas and his Film is Not Dead workshops.

I am truely in awe of his use of film, and only film, while shooting. His images are stunning, and to me, speak to the true roots of photography. Before there was Photoshop and Lightroom, your images on film really spoke to how much technical and artistic talent you had. You definitely couldn’t fake it with actions or post-processing work.

Mostly, the point of this post is that Jonathan inspired me to pick up my 35mm camera again. I learned to shoot film in high school, taking a photo class and using the dark room to experiment with exposure and developing. I shot film for several years before getting a digital camera. Shooting film was time-consuming and challenging, but I liked it. It took me while to jump on the digital bandwagon.

So…here’s what came out of this little film experiment. The camera already had a roll of film in it and I had no clue what could possibly be on it. When the photos were developed? Photos from SIX years ago! I guess it’s been a while since I shot film. :) I ended up shooting 5 rolls. Some of the photos below are from the roll that sat in the camera for six years.

Those wispy curls

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I have been chomping at the bit to take some photos of this little guy. I was lucky enough to have an impromptu photo session with him. It was a gorgeous day and the sun was out…yay! Of course I got burnt to a crisp, but he was having a blast playing in the long grass and crunchy leaves. His sister said it best when she said his thought bubble was “WOW, look at this cool, crunchy thingy.” Haha.

He will be turning one this summer and I can’t wait to do his one-year-old photos! :) And really? Those lashes and wispy curls!

All of these were taken manually with my 35mm film camera.
